How can Sports Therapy prevent injury?

Why choose Pro-Am?
Because we have experience in dealing with sports injuries and our knowledge is ever expanding each year to offer upto date, evidence based diagnostics skills, treatments and rehabilitation programs.

We speak to other therapists if an injury is not getting better to ensure we are doing our very best.

We advise you where to go if Pro-Am is unable to help. We use a qualified Podiatrist who can make prescription orthotics if required

What happens on my first visit to the clinic?
When you first come to the clinic, you will fill in an injury form with the Sports Therapist, this will include personal information and medical history to start and then you will be asked about your injury, how long you have had it and how it happened; if it came on suddenly or gradually over time. We will ask you questions that will help us to work out exactly why the issue arose. We will also watch you move, as quite often this is part of the reason why you have become injured, or why the injury may not be getting better. We will then go through further tests looking at flexibility, strength, mobility, your joints and spine, depending on the area of injury. From our assessment, we will then explain our findings in terms you understand, and treat you, giving you stretches and/or strengthening exercises to take home.

What do i need to wear?
This depends on you injury, for a thorough examination of the injury we need to expose the area, towels are provided for privacy when needed. If you come prepared with some shorts and ladies a sports bra.

How much does it cost?
An injury cosultation costs £35 and follow ups £25 if required. Sports massage is split into catergories of 1 area £25 i.e legs, 2 areas £30 i.e. legs and back, 3 or more areas £35 (full body).

Is it going to be painful?
Truefully yes some treatments can be painful but never beyond your own comfort zone. The treatments will always be appropriate to your injury and never cause harm.

Will i need more than 1 treatment?
Not neceassaily it depends on your injury, we aim to get you back fit within 3-4 treatments but it maybe that you dont need these. After your first appointment you will be given exercises to do at home if you comply to the program and you see improvement and your pain goes then you dont need to come back. If you have had your injury for a long time or is a serious injury i.e muscle tear then you will need more treatments but it is your choice. If you need more than 6 treatments then your follow-ups will be discounted to £20.

What is Podiatry and orthotics?
Podiatry looks at the mechanics of your feet, a podiatrist will look at the posture of your feet standing, walking and sometimes running. This is to find out if your feet maybe a cause of your injury. If the Sports Therapist thinks this is so then you will be referred to podiatrist who can then see if orthotics would help. Orthotics are custom made insoles to go in your shoes. They will be designed to correct any postural problems and support the foot creating balance.

Does my injury have to be related to sport?
No. Here are Pro-Am we deal with alot of injuries related to work, hobbies, leisure, anything that is causing pain and stopping you from been able to do what you enjoy or even just simple things like brush your hair.

How does a sports Therapist improve performance?
By keeping you injury free, minimising the time you are sidelined with an injury and advising you how to stay fit if you are injured, we help you to get stronger and fitter over time. In our experience, once an injury has been addressed, and areas of weakness identified, the athlete begins to perform better as they become stronger and more efficient in their movements. With reuglar sports massage we can monitor your muscles and joints and pick up any niggles before they develop into injuries. Sports massage will help you recover from training or repetitive actions, prolonged postures (desk work) and keep your muscles in balance. When muscles are balanced they work more efficiently.

If i am an athlete who has competitions coming up will you stop me competing and training?
No, this is the last thing we want to do!! Working with athletes  at all levels we realize that time taken off training can have a marked effect on your performance and training program. We will give you stretches and strengthening work which will help you return to form as quickly as possible. If you are unable to train fully, we will also advise you on the training that you can do without causing further damage, and any cross training that you can do to supplement your normal training with, so that when you return to sport, you will be as fit as possible. We will advise you if your injury is serious enough for you to rest but we will try our hardest to keep the time to a minimum. We can use methods like taping for competitions as a short term fix but at some time it maybe beneficial for you to take time out and get the injury fully rehabilitated, usually end of season.

How can a Sports Therapist prevent injury?
We can assess your muscles and joints to find possible areas of weakness which may lead to injury i.e. areas of decreased flexibility, decreased strength. We can then put together an appropriate exercise routine. Regular sports massage is advised so we can monitor the muscles and find any possible sites of over training, imbalance.
