Exercise and Arthritis - The Research

Doctors often recommend rest and avoidance of exercise for arthritis sufferers. This may be true when flare ups are severe but in my opinion avoidance can lead to loss of strength and range of motion and also depression. Many are told to give up their hobbies when it is unnecessary. Arthritis can limit some of your activities but most can be altered to suit your needs. If you take part in heavy weight bearing activities like running or contact sports it maybe time for a change in sport, however it all depends on how your joints react. This page is dedicated to research aimed at exercise and arthritis.

In my clinic I have experienced great results with gentle exercises such as walking, ballroom dancing, swimming, cycling etc. As well as a gentle range of motion and stretching routines for the full body. I also use massage to aid the muscles supporting the joints.
