Sports Therapy Work related Injuries Back and Neck Pain Joints Sprains and Muscles Strains |
More than 80% of the population will have experienced back and neck pain at some point in their lives. Every year 40% of people in the UK experience it, with today's way of life this is worryingly on the increase. Although very painful most neck and back pain is not serious. The muscles will often go into spasm as a protection mechanism causing pain. Despite this it is important to keep relatively active to stop the back from stiffening and prolonging the pain. If symptoms persist for more than a few days it is important to get your neck or back fully examined. Helpful tips include using ice for 20 minutes every 2 hours on the painful site (check cryotherapy page for safety guidelines). After a few days pressure pointing on areas of muscles which are in spasm can help to relax the muscles which are adding to the pain. This is done by finding a sore point in the neck, shoulder, back or buttock areas and applying a deep pressure with thumbs, fingers, massage tool, tennis ball etc. This pressure is applied for 10 seconds if the pain has not started to decrease within this time stop immediately as the condition is too inflamed and continue with ice. If however the pain has started to decrease keep that same pressure there for another 20 seconds. It is advised that you get a specialist to show you what to do if its the first time you have felt this injury. Manual therapy and an exercise programme are the most appropriate regimes to follow and the vast majority of people suffering back pain respond positively to this. Beyond simply treating your condition, our Sports Therapist works to address the causes of any niggles and get you working to actively rebuild a fitter, more flexible and balanced body. Articles;
