Acute V's Chronic

The handling and treatment of acute and chronic injuries are very different. An acute injury is defined “injury with rapid onset due to traumatic episode, but with short duration” like a muscle tear. In Chronic injuries there is a long period of repetitive overload like tennis elbow.

Complication of injury

Movement requires co-ordination. The sequence of body parts is called the kinetic chain. Each kinetic chain has its own sequence of which the basics is proximal (closet to the trunk) to distal (furthest away from the trunk). Injuries and adaptations in some areas of the kinetic chain can cause problems not only locally but distally. The distal link must compensate for the lack of force delivered through the more proximal links. These changes can cause alteration in technique and decrease performance which increases injury risk. An example would be “a tennis player with stiffness in the lower back may overload the rotator cuff muscles (shoulder stabilizers) while serving in order to generate sufficient power and thus develop a tear.” Acute on Chronic injury.

Sports Injuries

At what ever level of sport you participate in injury is the most frustrating time. Injury can prevent you from playing or severely impair the performance you expect.

Sports Injuries need to be diagnosed and treated effectively and efficiently. This should be within 3 days of the injury occurrence.

Unless the injury can be seen within a few hours of injury occurrence, the injury needs to settle for the first few days. This is due to swelling build up and most treatments other than ice can not be done. Another reason is diagnostic tests tend to be false negatives due to sensitivity of pain. Once the injury has occurred use ice every 20 minutes every 2 hours and keep moving the area but within pain free ranges. A compression bandage can be worn during ice treatments to help keep swelling down and give support to the area. Do not do any full stretches or heavy impact activities until been seen by a therapist.
