Work related Injuries Joint Sprains and Muscle Strains |
Work related Injuries are a common problem. (6 million days a year lost) Pro-Am is concerned with the overall management of the problem including recognising the factors which may have pre-disposed the patient to developing the symptoms. Most injuries in the work place are due to repetitive tasks related to posture, for example; typing, using a mouse, kneeling, lifting. For companies with desk workers it is advised to follow ergonomic guidelines to find the best environment to suit workers bodies and the work they carry out. Pro-Am can help with many things to improve workspace without needing to buy expensive equipment. Simple improvements include checking the monitor position, are files and equipment used frequently easy to access with a balance on both sides. If sitting for long periods a supportive adjustable chair is advised, the feet should be flat on the floor using a foot stool if necessary. It's important to have all joints at open angles. And finally it is essential to take regular breaks. This can be just a few minutes to get up an stretch, get some fresh water. A good tip is to have a little alarm to go off every hour. This break it not just to give posture a break it also allows the mind and eyes to relax and refresh. For manual labourers its vitally important to ensure correct posture when lifting. If an object is heavy its much more easily moved with more than one pair of hands. Try to change direction when performing repetitive tasks I.E. twisting from the right change to twisting from the left. If kneeling you should have knee pads. Most companies now have trained staff to show employees how to do tasks safely its then up to you to do them correctly. There are plenty of courses outside of work now available to show correct lifting manoeuvres. When injury does occur Pro-Am can identify whether you are using correct posture and whether you need an exercise programme to help aid your occupation. Treatments usually consist of soft tissue techniques, others will combined if needed. The object is to identify the tissues under stress, determine the cause, treat the condition and address the cause so that it doesn't recur.
