Marathon Treatment Package

As well as our new 2018 Health Scheme packages we have designed a SPECIAL package for anyone training for a marathon.

The Package

Total Cost £176 can be paid whole or in 4 monthly payments £44 (saves £6 per treatment)

(The contract runs for 4 months from the date of first payment received. Once expired any outstanding treatments are lost. Any payments not received make the contract null and void any treatments completed will be charged at full price and an invoice issued to be paid immediately)

What is included?

7 x 40 minute treatments to use as you please within a 4 mth period.

Recommended usage 5 treatments (1 every two weeks) training up for the marathon, 1 pre race massage (2-4 days before race day) and 1 post race massage (4-6 days after race day). To be started 12 weeks out from your race day. Or to be started 6 weeks out from race day having 1 massage a week using your 7th as a post race treatment.

Having a sports massage program can not guarantee you stay injury free, high mileage is tough on the body but if one occurs you can use your treatments for the injury instead of sports massage, with any extra sessions required at 15% discount.

Why go for this package?

For most of us, running a marathon is a massive challenge and commitment. So the last thing you want is an injury that could force you to pull out before the big day.

Sports massage can help you through to the finish line. But many runners are unaware of the physical and psychological benefits of sports massage when preparing for a marathon – maybe considering it a luxury. Everybody is different and the effects of heavy mileage is different for each person, understanding how your body responds can help you recovery better and prevent injury. Sports massage can help by making you more in tune with how your body feels, your muscle may feel fine until some one works through them. Our bodies are pretty good at telling us when something is sore we just have to work out why. Along with the sports massage we can discuss how you are training and make changes if needed.

A Regular “tune-up” can help you stay feeling better

If you have a chronic or recurrent problem, such as back pain, neck pain, headaches or arthritis a regular “tune-up” may help you enjoy life more.

Most of these problems mentioned respond very well to a course of therapy. In conjunction here at Pro-Am we usually give you self treatment exercises to help you improve your problem and maintain this improvement.

Some problems unfortunately can be recurring and can make life feel miserable. If this is the case then a regular maintenance treatment can make this more manageable. Treatment will help to keep you mobile, release tension and update self treatments as and when required so they give you the maximum benefit. By having a fortnightly or monthly “top-up” it can be more cost effective than having to have extensive treatment for acute episodes of pain.

“Tune ups” are also beneficial for those who have jobs that involve prolonged postures, repetitive movements, heavy lifting or perhaps your hobby or sport is demanding on the body. With a regular maintenance treatment you can keep your muscles and joints in good balance and, pick up on any niggles before they develop into a nasty injury. Our goal at Pro-Am is to keep you active in the activities you enjoy.

Are you are runner struggling with tightness?

One of the most common problems I see in the clinic is runners with tight rigid muscles. It is suprising how many runners can not do a full depth squat. Most runners will have tried ice baths, stretching, foam rolling and massage with little effect.

Part of my job is understanding how the body responds and adapts to exercise in order to help runners maintain and improve performance. Yes a lot of my work is deep tissue work but we also have to look at the whole picture; why is this muscle feeling sore? why is your posture not aligned? No one treatment will work on its own.

Most runners will say “I know I don’t stretch enough as what I should” If something feels tight it makes sense for you to stretch it right? If your feeling tight and you stretch, how long do the effects last for? do you have to keep stretching? Foam rolling is increasing in popularity but does rolling around in agony help? In my experience these offer only short term relief.

So what can you do?

Training exposes the muscles to load which can fatigue the muscles and they become tight. Increases in training and or intensity can overload the muscles if not done gradually. The solution would be to STRENGTHEN the muscles to cope with the demands.

Tightness/stiffness is how the body protects itself and can be one of the first signs of over training or injury. Pro-Am can help to reduce tightness in muscles with deep tissue work but also combine it with a functional strength exercise program.

 

 

 

Neck and Shoulders Feeling Tight?

Neck and shoulder pain? tight or painful chest? stressed at work or home? does your pain keep returning or getting worse? Breathing patterns can contribute to or even be the cause of your chronic muscular pain. Here is some information you will find helpful to start finding relief.

Breathing is intertwined with our bodies emotional responses and stress levels, how? the diaphragm’s connection to the brain. We have to breath to survive, we do not have to think about breathing it just happens but it can also be controlled.

How does breathing relate to painful shoulders? when we are stressed our brain sends an alarm signal that alerts us to danger. however this works like a fire alarm. It does not know whether you have burnt your toast or if the house is on fire. It simply sends an alarm.

Your reaction to this alarm has 3 reactions Fight, Flight or Freeze. Within the work environment you can not start a fight or run a way from it unless you want to lose your job. You just hope that the deadlines and work volume will somehow go away without devouring you? This is the freeze response and is usually accompanied with breath holding. Breath holding is a natural primitive survival instinct and is an automatic response to stress and pain.  It is something we do not usually notice ourselves doing unless we are extremely body aware.

When we freeze our breathing becomes shallow, our ribs move less and our muscles become tense. If we were in a real life threatening situation we would be playing dead. With this response repeated day after day it can lead to our muscles feeling stiff and hard, leading to chronic pain and dysfunction.

If not acknowledged and dealt with stress can cause many health problems, sore muscles are just the first step. It can lead to you feeling tired and run down, frequently getting ill and headaches. All warning signs that your body needs some kindly attention.

So what can you do?

You begin your journey by having awareness of your breath. It is advised that you do seek out a therapist to make sure you do not have any underlying mechanical reasons for your neck and shoulder pain. Breath holding maybe in response to protecting an injury site.

Muscular pain caused by work related stress is very treatable. With the assistance of a therapist you can become more aware of your breathing pattern and put ‘you’ in driving seat to combating your pain.
